The game is exciting and varied, and also plays well with two people. The players drive their herd from Texas to Kansas City, where the cattle are then delivered by train to distant cities. Each city can only be supplied once, so you have to plan well and move your 'railhead' forward in time to avoid extra costs. The value of your hand of cow cards must also equal the value of the city you supply, otherwise your cows will go to lesser destinations, resulting in penalty points. You increase the value of your hand by adding new, expensive cows to your herd and discarding cheaper ones in time. During the journey from Texas to Kansas City you can visit general buildings to perform actions there, such as selling cows (to your discard pile), recruiting cowboys, workers and engineers, building your own buildings at locations along the ' Trail' (which you can then visit to take advantageous actions), buying new, expensive cows that yield a lot and increase your reach on the trail. When you supply a city or station, place a token from your tableau at that location. This unlocks an 'action enhancer' that allows you, for example, to hold more cards in your hands or travel further during your journey to the Kansas City delivery point, where the herds depart by train to their final destination. During the game, players make 5 to 7 trips to Kansas, allowing them to visit their buildings several times to take advantage of the advantage there. Great Western Trail is exciting and offers many tactical possibilities. Its own buildings are two-sided: an easy side and a difficult side. Although it seems complex, the game is easy to play and remains fascinating again and again.
